Job Description

Internal Auditor

Salary: $91,267 - $102,676

Classification: Administrative/Exempt

Reports to: Chief Financial Officer

The Internal Auditor is responsible for evaluating the effectiveness of internal controls, risk management, and processes associated with the finances of the College. This role involves conducting audits, preparing reports, and making recommendations to improve the college's operations, enhance transparency and accountability and ensure compliance with policies, regulations, and laws.

Audit Planning:

* Develop a risk-based audit plans that aligns with the community college's strategic goals and objectives. Identify and prioritize high-risk areas by considering factors such as financial impact, regulatory requirements, and management concerns.

* Prepare an annual audit plan, detailing the scope, objectives, timing, and resource allocation for each audit project. Ensure the plan is reviewed and approved by senior management and the Board of Trustees.

* Draft and issue engagement letters for each audit project to communicate the audit's purpose, scope, and timeline to the relevant departments.

* Conduct preliminary research and data collection to understand the audit area, including reviewing policies, procedures, and previous audit reports.

Audit Execution:

* Perform comprehensive fieldwork, including interviewing key personnel, observing operations, and testing transactions and controls. Collect and analyze sufficient, reliable, and relevant evidence to support audit findings.

* Assess the design and operating effectiveness of internal controls within the audit scope.

* Identify control weaknesses and assess their impact on the college's operations.

* Performs analyses of business processes, identifies control weaknesses, and recommends feasible solutions.

* Verify compliance with applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures. Ensure that financial and operational activities are conducted in accordance with established guidelines.

* Utilize data analytics techniques and tools to identify trends, anomalies, and areas of concern. Perform substantive testing and analytical procedures to corroborate audit findings.

* Maintain thorough and accurate documentation of audit procedures, evidence collected, and conclusions reached. Ensure that audit workpapers meet professional standards and are ready for review.

Reporting:

* Discuss preliminary findings and potential issues with auditees during the audit process. Obtain management's perspective and responses to ensure accuracy and fairness

* Prepare draft audit reports that clearly communicate the audit's objectives, scope, methodology, findings, and recommendations. Ensure that reports are concise, factual, and actionable.

* Collaborate with management to develop responses to audit findings and recommendations. Ensure that agreed-upon corrective actions are practical and feasible.

* Issue final audit reports to senior management and the Board of Trustees. Present findings in a clear and professional manner, highlighting key issues and proposed improvements.

* Conduct follow-up audits to assess the implementation and effectiveness of corrective actions. Ensure that issues identified in previous audits are resolved in a timely manner.

* Present audit findings to management and the Board of Trustees as required.

Compliance and Risk Management:

* Ensure the college's compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and internal policies.

* Identify and assess areas of potential risk and recommend risk mitigation strategies.

* Conduct special investigations as needed, including fraud detection and prevention.

Collaboration and Advisory:

* Work closely with various departments to provide guidance on internal controls and risk management.

* Assist in the development and implementation of policies and procedures.

* Provide training and support to college staff on audit-related issues.

Continuous Improvement:

* Gather feedback from auditees and other stakeholders on the audit process and outcomes. Use this feedback to enhance the quality and efficiency of future audits.

* Stay informed about emerging audit techniques, tools, and best practices. Continuously improve audit methodologies and incorporate innovative approaches to enhance audit effectiveness.

* Participate in relevant training programs, workshops, and professional associations.

* Applies working knowledge of Generally Accepted Governmental Auditing Standards and the Institute of Internal Auditors Standards to procedures and documentation.

Minimum Qualifications:

* Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field.

* Minimum of 3-5 years of auditing experience, preferably in an educational or public sector environment.

* Knowledge of auditing standards, internal controls, and risk management principles.

* Intermediate level computer competency, including Microsoft Office applications.

Desired Qualifications:

* Accounting experience from a government, public sector agency.

* Certification as a Public Accountant, Certified Governmental Financial Manager or Management Accountant.

* Experience with Peoplesoft financial software.

Terms of Employment

This is a full-time exempt position scheduled to work Monday through Friday. The salary for this position is $91,267 - $102,676 annually, which includes a generous benefits package that includes the following.
